Confessions of a Sociopath: A Life Spent Hiding in Plain Sight, a book, written by M.E. Thomas is a captivating memoir about Thomas’ life as a sociopath. Throughout the book Thomas describes many aspects of her life such as going to college, her abusive father, and discovering she was a sociopath. She describes how going through some of these seemingly ordinary events her thought processes differed widely from the average person, or as she calls them empaths.

I personally loved the book. As someone who never enjoys reading nonfiction, I was genuinely impressed. The beginning of the book started with a story about her almost killing an animal which automatically grabs readers attention. I also really liked that not only did she describe how her life is different than others because she is a sociopath, she also gave her uncommon perspective and gave an in-depth view into the mindset of a person without empathy. For someone who has such high self-esteem and overconfidence she was remarkably self-aware which is a trait I admire. She was able to recognize that she was much too arrogant and confident for someone who looked like her and had her career. Without the author’s ability to achieve self awareness the book would not have been nearly as realistic and informative.

I recommend that people who have any interest in psychology read this book. Readers gain a unique understanding of a sociopath’s mind while reading this book. I recommend reading this book if you don’t know what a sociopath is because readers are provided insight into what a sociopath really is and not the over criminalized scary definition.
